Children in Conflict Autumn - 2019
This half term we have been learning about children in conflict, concentrating on the experiences of children in the second world war. Through history, English, geography, science, design technology and art, we have looked rationing, blackouts, the Blitz and much, much more!
The Sustainable Development Goals
Throughout each of our topics this year we will be focusing on some of the Sustainable Development Goals. This half term we have looked at Goal 2 - Zero Hunger, and Goal 10 - Reduced inequalities. These have linked with our RE topics for harvest, as well as with the rationing initiative in the second world war. More information can be found about the goals here, which the UN aim to achieve by the year 2030.

In English we have been concentrating on writing for different purposes, and have worked on good description, imagery and including complex and compound sentences in our work. Our main grammar focuses have been on expanded noun phrases and relative clauses; we have also looked at similes, personification, metaphors and alliteration.
Geography and Computing
We found cities that were heavily bombed on a map of Great Britain, using an atlas, and created a digital map of the Blitz, looking for patterns, similarities and differences between the cities.
In science, we have investigated the best material for a blackout curtain, and learned about how light travels and is reflected by different materials. We investigated four different materials, hypothesising and testing which one would keep out or absorb the most light. We were supposed to find out that a white material did the best job, until Ms. Leithead told us she had cut up an actual blackout curtain! We have revised the processes of a scientific investigation - aim, hypothesis, method, finding results and conclusion, and will work on this more as the year goes on.
We have also looked at how light travels, finding incident and reflected rays using card and a mirror to demonstrate where light goes. As well as this, we have attempted to make a periscope, and have discussed how these were used in the trenches on the front line during the war to help soldiers see over no mans land.

We have looked at how people in Britain were affected by rationing, the Blitz, blackouts and evacuation. The students have imagined how it would feel to be evacuated, and even explored some of the bedrooms at Wallington Hall where the evacuees that were sent there slept in. We have used the Imperial War Museum website to research cities which were most affected by the Blitz, and discussed the reasons why some cities were bombed more than others. We have used sources such as ration books and propaganda posters to deduce information, in order to use it in our writing and in other work.
In technology, we have been developing our sewing skills, in the spirit of 'Make do and mend'; we used old t-shirts and fabric scraps to construct and sew hair scrunchies and cushion covers. Everyone had a chance to use the sewing machine and we are all VERY proud of what we made! We have also been doing some menu planning and cooking, using rationed amounts of food to create recipes such as chocolate pinwheels, bacon and eggs and vegetable soup. Most of the students agreed that it was very difficult to create a menu on such limited rations, and they would miss a lot of the foods that we can eat today!
In art, we have been working on Painting with perspective, and have used the works of Henry Moore as inspiration. We have practised using vanishing points, a horizon line, and lines of perspective in order to keep our paintings and drawings as realistic as possible. We will continue to practise this, as well as introducing light and shadow, as the year progresses.
