Homes Under the Hammer - Summer 2018

We’re delighted to welcome you back after the Easter break.  The children have been begun preparing for our new Mini Adventure, ‘Homes Under The Hammer’, during which they will be running time travelling estate agencies.  In their role as estate agents, the children’s task will be to research, compare and understand differences between homes in different time periods across the whole of civilisation.

The Mini Adventure will culminate in a property auction at 2:15pm on Wednesday 16th May, where families are invited to come and bid on lots presented by the children

Ton Shulten
We have been studying the artwork of Ton Schulten, giving particular attention to his city landscapes.  We noted how his blocks of colour change tone in relation to the position of the sun.  We looked to replicate this by lightening and darkening paints to create different shades.
A trip through time
The children are deepening their understanding of chronology by designing and placing events on a timeline.  This has prompted further discussions of how and why homes changed at different points in history.  It has also started us thinking about what homes will be like in the future.
Building a Building
The children have each chosen a point in history to become experts in.  Using the research they have conducted, the children have begun creating replicas of houses from their chosen time period.  This takes us from the Stone Age up to the times of the Tudors.  These are the buildings that will be auctioned off under the hammer on May 16th.
